What is the PSAT?

Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) is taken before the SAT and hence, it gives the students an idea of what they will face on the SAT test. It is estimated that approximately 3.5 million students take this test every year.

Most people like to call PSAT as the practice version of the SAT exam, which it is but it also helps students qualify for the National Merit Scholarships. PSAT is also known as PSAT/NMSQT.

PSAT has the same structure as the SAT and thus has the same number of sections: Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. There is no essay section on the PSAT and there is also no negative marking, just like SAT.

How is PSAT Test Scored?

PSAT test scores are presented in 4 formats. The first one is the raw score which is the number of answers that are correct. This is the rawest form of the score without any processing. Next comes the scaled score which falls between 160-760. The raw score is directly converted to the scaled score.

The third score type is the composite score. It is the sum of the scaled scores of all sections. This score falls between 320-1520. The fourth score format is the percentile score. Every student receives two percentile scores. One of the general percentiles that compare your performance to other students. And another is User Percentile which compares your scores to PSAT test takers from the same grade.
