Children tend to forget their lessons in the absence of school during the summer break and this event is commonly known as summer slide. This academic year, the forgetting was compounded by the COVID-19 school closures. So, your child needs a lot more than just new stationary.
Back-to-School Courses – ELA Elementary Level 1
eTutorWorld has created a specialized ELA Elementary Level 1 Summer Course for children in grades 1 and 2. This course is aimed at rebuilding the foundation of the English language and filling the learning gaps.
Media Engagement and Age-Appropriate Activities
This course has well-balanced sessions based on the common core pedagogy which is blended with media engagement and age-appropriate activities.
Diagnostic Assessment
Before we begin, our tutors will conduct an assessment to understand the English language arts learning abilities of your child and his/her requirements. Our tutors may then modify the sessions according to the child’s learning requirements and fill in the gaps before the schools begin.
Learning with Fun
This course has 55-minute sessions of learning with fun. We use grade-appropriate tools to create an efficient learning session that keeps children interested throughout. Through this course, we cover phonics, reading, library, creative writing, reading, fun activities, review, and handout & assessment.
ELA Course Structure
- Diagnostic Assessment and Evaluation
- Phonics – It will be a thematic-based approach through short stories.
- Phonemes – Long and short vowel sounds/ Blends and diagraphs.
- Monosyllabic words/Multisyllabic words.
- Inflectional endings to base words/ Root words-suffixes and prefixes.
- Spelling sound correspondences and sight words/ Irregular words
- Synonyms and Antonyms
- Spelling strategies using context clues
- Language-based activities: These sessions will be based on fiction/non-fiction texts.
- Parts of speech (part 1) – Nouns/Pronouns/Adjectives
- Parts of speech(part 2) – Verbs-tenses/ Irregular verbs/ Adverbs
- Types of sentences and endings/punctuation.
- Subject and predicate/ ‘wh’ question words and statements.

Reading and Comprehension: 5 sessions
These sessions will also build on critical thinking skills.
- Reading comprehension/Picture comprehension.
- Making inferences and summarizing a text.
- Comparing and contrasting stories/texts.
- Use of figurative language in a text.
- Character analysis.
- Role of a character in a story setting.
- Identifying cause and effect in a text.
- Retelling a text/Modified ending to a fictional text.
- Creative Writing:-
- Understanding the writing process/Sentence and paragraph structure.
- Paragraph writing/Highlighting the main idea of a paragraph.
- Sequencing and making connections in different kinds of texts.
- Friendly/Informal letter writing.
- Writing a story with a problem and providing a solution.
- Writing short research papers.
- Introduction to Poem writing.
Fun based language activities ( 3 sessions)
These activities can be video-based or online activities.

How can eTutorWorld customize the ELA course for my child?
At eTutorWorld, we customize both the curriculum and the pace of the course according to a child’s learning style and speed. You are welcome to share your concerns (topics) with us and we will modify the curriculum accordingly. We will also conduct a diagnostic test that will help you understand your child’s requirement and we may alter the curriculum after a discussion with you.
What topics does this course cover? Will it build on the previous levels?
ELA1 is the first level of this course and is meant for children in grades 1 and 2. In this course, the aim is to introduce the basics of the language and to encourage children to understand the significance of English literature. Before we get there, however, we cover the base with topics like Phonics, Vocabulary, and Reading. We follow them up with Creative Writing, Fun Activities, Reviews, and Assessments.
Does the course have a flexible timeline?
Yes, all the courses have a flexible timeline at eTutorWorld and the same applies to the ELA – Level 1 course. We do not have a set timeline for the completion of the course. You are free to discuss and set a pace for your child’s lessons. We will move ahead with the child and ensure the target of the summer course is completely achieved by the time schools reopen again.
