Learn Exponents from Certified Online Algebra Tutor
How do you multiply numbers with exponents?
An exponent refers to the number of times a number is multiplied by itself. Exponents are also called Powers or Indices. Exponential notation is an easier way to write a number as a product of many factors.
The number being multiplied is the base and the exponent tells you how many times the base is multiplied.
What are exponent examples?
62 = 6 × 6
63 = 6 × 6 × 6
64 = 6 × 6 × 6 × 6
65 = 6 × 6 × 6 × 6 × 6
What if the Exponent is 1, or 0?
If the exponent is 1, then you just have the number itself (example 41 = 4)
Any nonzero number raised to the power of zero equals 1 (example 4.840 = 1)
But what about 00? It could be either 1 or 0, and so people say it is “indeterminate”.
A number with an exponent of two is known as a square of a number.
is read as seven squared
A number with an exponent of three is known as a cube of a number.
is read as nine cubed
